From local hockey games and community events to family celebrations and fundraisers, this recreation centre was created to give Norland a space where people can connect, celebrate, and create lasting memories.

Every community has a place where people naturally come together. It's where neighbours reconnect, children play their first games, local organizations host events, and families create traditions that last for generations.

The vision for the Norland Recreation Centre was to create exactly that kind of place. More than simply providing additional indoor space, the project was about investing in the future of the community by creating a welcoming facility that could support recreation, celebrations, meetings, and events throughout the year.

Designed to serve residents of all ages, the building creates opportunities for people to stay active, connect with one another, and strengthen the sense of community that defines small-town Ontario.

cmb solution

Creating a recreation centre that could be enjoyed year-round while remaining cost-effective required a different approach than a traditional enclosed facility. CMB incorporated an open-wall design that allows the building to naturally transition between seasons, providing fresh airflow and an open atmosphere during the warmer months while remaining suitable for winter programming. By eliminating the need for fully enclosed wall systems, the project also reduced material requirements and overall construction costs, delivering a practical solution that maximized value for the community without compromising functionality.

results

The completed recreation centre provides Norland with a flexible space that can be enjoyed throughout every season. During the warmer months, the open-wall design creates an inviting atmosphere for community events, recreational programming, and gatherings, while still providing the shelter needed for year-round activities.

By reducing the amount of enclosed wall construction, the project also delivered a more cost-effective solution without sacrificing functionality. The result is a facility that maximizes value for the community, offering a versatile venue where residents can come together, stay active, and create lasting memories for years to come.
